Cover Gal

Don’t get ya pantaloons twisted – We certainly aren’t gonna turn all Jo Wiley on you & start gushing hype over Snow Patrol mashing up Rhianna. Nah nah nah – but we do like a strong cover, especially something that makes you feel creepy-goosebump-firey.
We are ultra tight with The XX, ever since they were 15 and recorded ‘blood red moon’ in a Wandsworth bedroom with no double glazing and plenty of background sirens – we had deep love for them. Romy and Oliver do special things together, their voices are blended like the stripes in toothpaste, mainly because they were born together, playgrouped together, schooled together and literally learnt to speak together. This Aaliyah cover is tender engaging sounds, with a eerie edge that makes it push to the uncomfortable side. Like when you fall asleep watching a dvd & the title theme floats through your dreams – yeah?
Although we don’t make time for ironic semi-comedy cover versions (ahum, Jamie Cullum – Frontin’) occasionally something turns out dazzling. Florence and the Machine are hot for world domination, mercury awards, festival glory…blah… but that Welch gal has some far out vocal chords and makes her version of Halo , by HRH Beyonce, sound delicious. We might just be getting carried away though, like that time we almost got emotional watching Alexandra on the X Factor singing with B – peer pressure pleasure.
Just incase we’re edging into the queasy side of things, we thought we’d grab you by the guts with this HEARTFELT performance from Lil’ Kim and Cyndi Lauper…you read right… this is so fucking bizarre we were left in silence – put your lighters up?! for Nelson Mandela?! Okay guy…
